Everyone appreciates a cool treat on a hot summer day, but for professional golfer Charley Hull, a simple ice cream cone coincided with a spectacular mid-round turnaround at the Evian Championship.

Hull’s opening round began with a rocky start, as she suffered two bogeys over her first six holes. However, she quickly found her rhythm, playing her final 12 holes at an impressive 7-under par. During this red-hot stretch, a viral moment was captured: Hull pausing to hold an ice cream cone in the middle of her round.

Despite the optics and internet speculation, the English star didn’t actually indulge in the dessert.

“I didn’t eat the ice cream,” Hull clarified to reporters. “My boyfriend got it for my caddie, so I held it for a minute when he was putting my club in the bag.”

While the ice cream wasn’t the secret to her success, Hull does maintain a strict on-course nutrition plan to keep her energy up during tournaments. Her typical regimen is far more functional, consisting primarily of nutrition bars and bananas.

“I always eat every other hole,” Hull explained of her strategy. “So I eat on the third, the fifth, and the seventh, and then pretty much every hole.”

The true catalyst for her remarkable comeback was a shift in mindset and resilience on the course.

“I kind of just believed in myself and just kind of relaxed out there, took my time, and took advantage of the birdies,” she noted.

This performance marks a strong return to the Evian Championship for Hull, who was forced to withdraw from the event last year due to illness. Currently playing in her 11th event of the season, she has already secured top-tier finishes this year, including a top-10 placement at the Chevron Championship and a runner-up finish at the U.S. Women’s Open.

Now sitting comfortably in the top three—just three strokes behind leader Aki Iwai at 8-under—Hull is embracing the experience in France.

“Very lucky to be here,” she remarked. “It’s almost like a little holiday.”
