In a monumental move for women’s soccer, Australian striker Sam Kerr is returning to the United States. Just days after closing the curtains on a dazzling, trophy-laden tenure with English powerhouse Chelsea, Kerr has signed a blockbuster deal with reigning National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) champions Gotham FC.
The free-agent striker has committed to the New York-based club through the 2030 season, marking a historic homecoming to the franchise where she spent some of her most formative years.
For Kerr, the move represents a full-circle moment. The lethal forward previously starred for the club between 2015 and 2017 when it was known as Sky Blue FC.
“This club was an important part of my journey, and to come back at this moment, with everything Gotham has built, is really special,” Kerr said in an official statement. “The ambition here is clear, and I’m looking forward to helping this team compete for trophies and create more history.”
The signing is a massive coup for the NWSL, which has fought hard to retain domestic talent against a surging European market. By bringing the 2023 Ballon d’Or runner-up to the biggest sports market in the United States, Gotham FC has signaled its intent to build a lasting global dynasty.
“Sam is one of the defining players of her generation and a game-changing talent who has consistently delivered at the highest levels of world football,” said Yael Averbuch West, Gotham FC’s President of Football Operations. “Bringing Sam back to Gotham is a landmark moment for our club, and we couldn’t be more excited.”
Kerr heads back across the Atlantic after a legendary six-season run in London. During her time with Chelsea, she netted 116 goals across all competitions and guided the Blues to five consecutive Women’s Super League (WSL) titles, cementing her status as one of the most clinical finishers in the history of the English game.
Yet, despite her six-and-a-half-year absence from American soil, Kerr’s footprint on the NWSL remains unmatched. Across seven previous seasons in the league—split between Sky Blue FC and the Chicago Red Stars—she tallied 77 regular-season goals, a record that still stands today. Her spectacular 2017 campaign with Sky Blue FC, where she claimed both the Golden Boot and the league MVP award after scoring 17 goals in 22 games, remains legendary.
Gotham FC fans won’t have to wait long to see the superstar back in action. Kerr is scheduled to make her official debut shortly after the NWSL’s mid-season transfer window opens on July 14.
Her first match back is highly anticipated to be on July 15, when Gotham FC hosts the Washington Spirit in the high-profile Queens Classic in New York. With Kerr leading the frontline, the reigning champions look more formidable than ever as they chase back-to-back titles.
