Tiger Woods’ former coach, Hank Haney, has reignited discussions about The Players Championship becoming golf’s fifth Major. Haney argues that the current four Majors and the Ryder Cup are insufficient, emphasizing the tournament’s prestige and significance on the PGA Tour calendar.

Despite not holding official Major status, The Players Championship boasts the largest purse of any regular-season event, with a $4.5 million winner’s share. Golf legends like Lee Trevino and Jack Nicklaus support its elevation, citing its elite field, challenging course, and immense fan engagement as reasons for reconsideration.

Two-time champion Tiger Woods and reigning champion Rory McIlroy have also endorsed the idea, stressing its competitive intensity. McIlroy stated, “If there’s ever going to be a fifth Major, it’s already here.” As debate continues, The Players Championship remains one of the most prestigious events in golf, shaping careers and defining legacies.
