LIV Golf has dramatically reshaped professional golf’s financial landscape, boosting the earnings of top players by an estimated $370 million since June. Backed by Saudi Arabia’s $620 billion sovereign wealth fund, the tour offers lucrative contracts, reshuffling the highest-paid golfers’ rankings.

The league’s 54-hole format, louder atmosphere, and fewer events appeal to many players. Bryson DeChambeau, for instance, cited increased rest and enjoyment as reasons for joining, but his reported $125 million contract likely played a role. With a $62 million upfront payment, he now ranks third among the world’s highest-paid golfers.

Phil Mickelson leads the earnings chart with $138 million, despite facing criticism for supporting LIV Golf. His $200 million deal, with half paid upfront, surpassed even Lionel Messi’s earnings. Dustin Johnson follows closely, securing $97 million after leaving the PGA Tour for a reported $125 million contract.

However, LIV faces challenges. It lacks a major U.S. broadcast partner and is burning through cash rapidly. Meanwhile, the PGA Tour has increased prize purses to compete. Golf legend Tiger Woods rejected a nine-figure LIV offer, questioning its long-term sustainability while remaining among the sport’s highest earners.
