Sam Kerr is set to appear in a London court at 11 p.m. AEDT on Monday for the first day of her criminal trial. She is accused of racially aggravated harassment of a police officer during an incident in January 2023. If convicted, she could face jail time.

The Matildas captain allegedly made a racially charged remark to PC Lovell after a dispute over a taxi fare. Initially detained but not charged until January 2024, Kerr pleaded not guilty in March. Her defense argues there was no intent to cause harassment or distress, and the case lacks racial motivation.

The trial may disrupt Kerr’s rehabilitation from an ACL injury, though she wasn’t scheduled to play. Chelsea and Football Australia have publicly supported her. If found guilty, she could face up to two years in prison and a fine of nearly $5,000.
