PGA Championship Is ‘America’s Favorite’ Jordan Spieth’s Only Lifeline for Paris Olympics; Here’s Why

Jordan Spieth has missed the past two Olympic Games, and his participation in the 2024 Paris Olympics remains uncertain. In 2016, he withdrew due to health concerns over the Zika virus, calling it the toughest decision of his career. In 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic and fierce competition kept him out, with Xander Schauffele securing gold for the U.S. Now, with golf making its third Olympic appearance since 1904, Spieth faces an uphill battle to qualify for Paris.

Olympic qualification relies on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), with the top 15 players earning automatic spots by June 17. Spieth, once world No. 1, currently ranks 24th and falls outside the top 60 in the Olympic Golf Rankings. To have a chance, he must deliver exceptional performances, particularly at Valhalla, where 100 OWGR points are at stake. With four missed cuts this season and a disqualification at the Genesis Invitational, he must rebound with victories to keep his Olympic hopes alive.

Even if Spieth wins the PGA Championship, competition for a U.S. team spot remains fierce. The top four American golfers, including Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele, hold priority. Spieth must outperform them consistently or hope for withdrawals. With four additional events before the qualification deadline, his path to Paris is challenging but not impossible. Can he reclaim his peak form and secure his first Olympic appearance? Only time will tell.
