Jordan Spieth endured a frustrating third round at the 2025 Players Championship, showcasing an emotional outburst after his approach shot on the par-5 16th hole found water. The three-time major winner, aiming to reach the green in two, watched in dismay as his ball strayed right into a hazard, prompting him to angrily hurl his club. His round ended with a 1-over 73, placing him well behind the leaders.

Spieth has been working his way back to full fitness following wrist surgery last August, which led to his longest PGA Tour layoff since 2012. His performance at TPC Sawgrass reflected his ongoing struggles, featuring moments of brilliance alongside costly mistakes. While he impressed with two eagle chip-ins in the opening round, inconsistency plagued his game, culminating in a chaotic moving day.

His close friend and Ryder Cup teammate, Justin Thomas, has also had an up-and-down tournament. After a disastrous first-round 78, Thomas rebounded in remarkable fashion with a 10-under 62 in round two, tying the course record. Despite falling short of a new record, he expressed pride in his mental resilience. Both players now face an uphill battle as they look to regain form ahead of the season’s major championships.
