Jordan Spieth began the Valero Texas Open with an impressive 5-under 67, positioning himself among the top five. However, a second-round 73, marred by short game struggles, pushed him four strokes off the lead. Despite these setbacks, Spieth remains optimistic, citing inconsistent chip shots as the key issue.

Spieth’s Friday frustrations echo a broader trend—his second-round scoring average ranks 97th on the PGA Tour. He’s aware that correcting this pattern is critical to winning again. “I’ve got to get better at closing these rounds out,” he admitted, noting that recent struggles stem from misjudged chips, not a lack of confidence.

Still, Spieth’s familiarity with TPC San Antonio offers hope. A past champion here, he understands the challenges of playing in Texas wind and navigating tricky greens. His focus remains on hitting fairways and staying creative. If he can close strong this weekend, Spieth may yet return to the PGA Tour winner’s circle.
