Rory McIlroy expressed concerns over Jordan Spieth’s recent remarks regarding the PGA Tour’s potential deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). McIlroy believed that if he were the PIF, he wouldn’t have been pleased with Spieth’s stance, which suggested that the PGA Tour might not need the Saudi-backed funding. This led to a lengthy discussion between the two players.

Spieth’s comments came after the announcement of a new investment deal between the PGA Tour and the Strategic Sports Group (SSG), which secured $1.5 billion in funding. While Spieth acknowledged the potential benefits of unification with PIF, he emphasized that the PGA Tour could move forward without it. McIlroy, however, questioned how PIF would react to hearing such a statement, given their previous discussions on a partnership.

McIlroy stressed that excluding PIF from the game’s future wasn’t a viable option, as they have vast financial resources dedicated to sports investment. Although he understood Spieth’s perspective, he felt the timing of the remarks could impact ongoing negotiations. Their conversation highlighted the complexities surrounding the PGA Tour’s future and its relationship with LIV Golf and PIF.
