Rory McIlroy has decided not to rejoin the PGA Tour Policy Board after players expressed discomfort with his return. Initially set to replace Webb Simpson, McIlroy stepped away after complicated discussions reopened old tensions. Simpson will now complete his term until 2025.

McIlroy acknowledged the process was “complicated and messy,” suggesting some board members were uneasy about his return. Despite offering to help, he ultimately accepted the decision, emphasizing that he holds no hard feelings. Meanwhile, Simpson contradicted reports of opposition, stating McIlroy remains valued for his global perspective on the sport.

McIlroy’s exit from the board last year had stirred mixed reactions, with some colleagues questioning his commitment. Kevin Streelman pointed out that resigning from an elected role should mean forfeiting future re-entry. Nonetheless, McIlroy continues to advocate for a deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund to unify professional golf.

Despite his exclusion, McIlroy remains hopeful that a resolution will be reached. Comparing the situation to the Good Friday Agreement, he emphasized the need for compromise. He also expressed confidence in Simpson’s leadership, believing it will help guide the PGA Tour through its ongoing challenges.
