Phil Mickelson has publicly criticized Fred Couples, calling his comments about Brooks Koepka a “low class jerk move.” Couples recently suggested Koepka wants to return to the PGA Tour after struggling with LIV Golf’s limited competition. Mickelson argued that Couples’ remarks either misrepresented Koepka’s intentions or undermined his control of the narrative.

This controversy adds tension ahead of the annual Masters past champions’ dinner, where both Mickelson and Couples will be present. Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion, and Couples, who won in 1992, have taken opposing stances on LIV Golf, deepening the divide between the rival circuits.

Meanwhile, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan declined to confirm whether LIV players have inquired about returning. He emphasized his focus on strengthening the PGA Tour while ongoing negotiations with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund continue. The dispute highlights the ongoing struggle for control in professional golf’s evolving landscape.
