Former Matildas captain Sam Kerr is nearing a return to competitive football after being named in Chelsea’s squad for the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals. This marks her first selection since suffering an ACL injury in January 2024 during training.

Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor acknowledged that Kerr’s return remains uncertain but praised her rehabilitation progress. While she is unlikely to feature in the first leg against Manchester City, her inclusion signals a potential return later in the tournament, with the Matildas also monitoring her recovery.

Off the field, Kerr has faced personal challenges, recently being cleared of racially aggravated harassment charges. She and her fiancée, Kristie Mewis, are expecting their first child, adding another milestone to her eventful year as she eyes a full comeback.
